Titanium Sponge Plant

The bhoomi pooja of the Titanium Sponge Plant was held on 17th April 2008. Shri. N.K.Premachandran - Hon. Minister for Water Resources, Shri. A.K.LUKE - CMD, KMML along with dignitaries from DMRL, VSSC, KPHCC witnessed the occasion.
The new plant is envisaged to be a path breaker in the industry with cutting edge technology...

KMML has taken the big leap into Aerospace working towards value addition of its Titanium Tetra Chloride with the launch of the Titanium Sponge Plant. With the production of this ‘Grey Gold’ the company has now forayed into a niche market. Titanium metal derived from Titanium Sponge finds use in a variety of fields – aerospace industry, atomic energy, defense, submarine, under-sea pipe works, jewellery etc.

Due to its lightweight, higher strength, non-corrosive and non-reactive quality it finds use in surgical and orthopaedic transplants. KMML will soon be producing the ‘Grey Gold’ for the Nation’s requirement.

The importance that titanium holds in the 21st Century owing to its special characteristics is tremendous, with high potential for further research and development. KMML’s foray into the production of Titanium Sponge makes it the first and only company in India, and the 5th country in the world, to produce Titanium Sponge. The other countries actively pursuing the production of Grey Gold are: China, Japan,  USA and USSR . With this, India can hope to achieve self sufficiency in the aerospace industry.

KMML is executing the Project with funding from VSSC estimated at Rs.95 Crores and using technology indeginously developed by  DMRL Hyderabad.

Magnesium (Mg) and Titanium Tetrachloride (TiCl4) will be mixed in specific proportions to get Titanium Sponge and Magnesium Chloride. The byproduct - Magnesium Chloride can be used for the manufacture of welding flex and welding rod. KMML will also be employing its resources for separating Magnesium and Chlorine from Magnesium Chloride using electrolysis.

Equipments like: Electric furnace, Reactors, Vacuum Pumps, TiCl4 pumps, Transformer, Diesel Generator etc have already been ordered. Rs.62.7 crores has already been allotted for different works including Civil work.

The foundation stone of the Titanium Sponge Plant was laid on 27th Dec 2006 by Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan in the presence of the other eminent dignitaries. Full fledged operations of the Plant for manufacture of Titanium Sponge will commence by June 2009.
